FishLab

 
The Fishlab is part of the Laboratory of Biotechnology applied to the inspection of food of animal origin of the Department of Veterinary Sciences, University of Pisa. The Laboratory is located at Podere Le Querciole, in San Piero a Grado, Pisa, Italy.

The research activity of the lab applies to the area of safety and technological innovation in the fish food sector, which mainly involves the development of analytical methods for species identification and traceability of fish products.

The main activities of the FishLab are:

– DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS BASED ON GENE SEQUENCING OR OTHER MOLECULAR METHODS for the analysis of commercial products;

– MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF FISH PRODUCTS to meet the needs of enterprises to correctly identify a product entering the market with the appropriate official designation;

– INSPECTION AND CONTROL OF PRODUCTS ALREADY PLACED ON THE MARKET, in order to ensure their conformity with the current legislation, on request of the competent authorities or of private companies;

– CREATION OF AN INTERNAL BIOLOGICAL DATABASE of species of commercial interest at the international level, through the collaboration with official structures of other countries;

– TRANSFER OF THE “KNOW-HOW ” by offering support for the creation of laboratories in other structures;

– STAFF TRAINING for all those operating in molecular laboratories for species identification;

– STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS TRAINING: in the framework of European and International mobility projects;

– PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH PROJECTS

– SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS related to the research achievements and innovations (see Publications page)

The activities of the laboratory are carried out in the framework of collaborations with national structures responsible for official controls (ASL, IZS) and with international research organizations. In addition, thanks to the close collaboration with the CSISA (Sino Italian Center for Food Safety), the laboratory has a network of Asian partners, involved in both research and activities of food inspection.
